Gary Holt, guitarist for Slayer and Exodus, has called out Beyoncé as “the most overrated talent on earth”. Speaking on the Scandalous podcast, Holt questioned why artists like Beyoncé receive so much credit when others like Taylor Swift are maligned. “Beyoncé will put out a song and there’s 30 fuckin’ people on [the credits]”, he said. “How can 30 people write a song all gathered together? It’s like you’re not a songwriter, Beyoncé. Her daughter got a songwriting credit and a Grammy because she probably threw some kindergarten rhyme on one line and like, ‘Yep! Give her a Grammy.’ She now has one seventh of the Grammys Prince ever got.”

The guitarist praised Taylor Swift as a hard worker who writes her own music. “Taylor writes everything. So I give her credit. She’s a songwriter. And some of these other people require massive teams — just like a factory of songwriting. Who even knows who did what anymore?” Holt went on to describe how Swift gave $100,000 bonuses to all of the truck drivers for her Eras tour, while questioning whether Beyoncé would do the same for her drivers.

However, Holt saved his highest praise for Adele, calling her “the greatest singer of the last fuckin’ 30 years”. Holt is the guitarist, bandleader, and principal songwriter for Exodus and a permanent member of Slayer since Jeff Hanneman’s death in 2013.

Guitarist Kerry King emphasized that these shows are celebratory in nature and not indicative of the band’s return to recording or touring
