NTIA calls on Hackney Council to save Boxpark Shoreditch from closure

Boxpark Shoreditch, a vital nightlife institution in East London, announced in July that it would be closing its doors for good by the end of summer 2024. The Night Time Industries Association (NTIA), along with local residents, is calling on Hackney Council to help save Boxpark as they believe its closure would have a detrimental effect on the local community and economy.

Boxpark’s founder, Roger Wade, announced in a statement that despite their best efforts, they were unable to prevent the closure due to a planning requirement. Hackney Council has been urged to look into Boxpark Shoreditch’s impact on the local economy and job creation since its development. Since its launch in 2011, Boxpark Shoreditch has contributed over £1 billion to the local economy and created over 1,000 jobs.

The NTIA’s Michael Kill has called on the government and local authorities to address the issue of restrictive regulatory controls that hinder business investments across the country. Boxpark exemplifies this issue faced by many businesses, says Michael Kill, and it needs to stop. He believes that the new government can reach out to invigorate the local planning department, and Hackney Council to find a solution.

Boxpark Shoreditch has provided a platform for independent businesses over the years, including clothing brands, food retailers, and more. The venue has welcomed many artists and DJs over the past decade, including Girls Don’t Sync, Neptizzle, Ell Murphy, and Jeremiah Asiamah. It has also featured sets from BBC presenters Nadia Jae, DJ Firestarr, and Jess Iszatt.
