An officer from Greater Manchester Police is under investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct for assault following an incident at Manchester Airport. The attack, which saw a man kicked and stamped on, was captured on video and widely shared on social media, leading to the suspension of the officer by the force on Thursday. The IOPC stated that it is gathering evidence and has already acquired “significant amounts” of CCTV footage and body-worn video.
The regulator said a disciplinary notice has been served in relation to “potential gross misconduct for a number of alleged breaches of police professional standards including his use of force”. The issue of notices does not necessarily mean criminal charges will be brought, according to a representative. The investigation will determine whether there will be a charging decision referred to the Crown Prosecution Service.
A statement posted on Greater Manchester Police’s official Twitter account said that officers on duty “were violently attacked and several have attended hospital.” Three officers were hospitalised as a result. Four men were arrested on suspicion of assault and affray and were released on bail.
Solicitor Akhmed Yakoob, the lawyer for Muhammad Fahir Amaaz, the man who was kicked, said Mr Amaaz’s condition had declined on Wednesday night. Following a CT scan, it was discovered that there was a cyst on his brain. The man’s brother also took part in the incident which occurred at about 20:30 BST.
The family of the victim has appealed for “calm in all the communities.” A number of peaceful protests emerged following the incident, including one outside Rochdale police station where demonstrators chanted “shame on you.” Community leaders in the area requested to meet with the IOPC to discuss their concerns and stress that they do not condone any acts of violence as a result of the incident
