A couple from Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, are currently stuck in Spain after their baby was born three months prematurely while they were on their babymoon in Tenerife. Alis Lloyd unexpectedly went into labour and gave birth to George at the University Hospital of the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. Although George is in a stable condition, the couple’s insurance didn’t cover their accommodation and living costs and they’ve been told they’ll need to stay in Spain for eight weeks.
The couple, Cai Daniels and Alis Lloyd, have described having a baby abroad as a “stressful” experience, with the language barrier causing difficulties. They first got to hold baby George five days after his birth. As George was born prematurely, the couple have been told that it could be up to eight weeks before they can fly home.
Their insurance doesn’t cover any compensation for accommodation or living costs, and their hotel is an hour away from the hospital. Mr Daniels considered leaving Tenerife to work to make the extra money but stated that “I’m self-employed, so I have to be in the UK to earn. It was petrifying, to be honest.”
A friend of Mr Daniels set up a fundraising page to help the new parents, which has already raised more than £3,000. The couple said they were “so grateful” for the support they’ve received and are planning to move closer to the baby once Ms Lloyd has recovered from her C-section. The couple estimate that paying for travel and accommodation will cost them £6,000
