Ghetts on the Mercury Prize, music and ‘Supacell’: “It’s not our purpose to make money, pay bills and die”

British rapper Ghetts has been nominated for the 2024 Mercury Prize for his album “On Purpose With Purpose”. Speaking to NME on the red carpet at the launch of the prestigious music award, Ghetts spoke about the importance of finding purpose in life. He described the album as being about “a man finding purpose” and contrasted it with his last record, which was about a “conflicted human being, which I still am, but in that conflict, we still must find purpose as humans.”

Ghetts said he creates music for the love of the art, not just for commercial success. He discussed the importance of fulfilling experiences in life, noting that “It’s not our purpose to make money, pay bills and die. That’s where I was at. OK, you can make money – you can make a lot of money and live a lavish life – but what are you doing?”

Ghetts has also been acting in the Netflix series “Supacell” and discussed how he sees acting as another way to expand his artistic horizons. He spoke about the success he’s found as an actor opening new doors for him, saying, “It feels good to have success in another area where the door was probably opened by music.”

In September, Ghetts will appear alongside D Double E, Mahalia, Nao, and Wretch 32 at the “More Life: Pass The Mic” concert in memory of Stephen Lawrence, a teenager who was murdered in a racially motivated attack in 1993. Ghetts expressed pride in being part of something that addresses important social issues and added, “There’s still progress to be made.”

The winner of the 2024 Mercury Prize will be announced in September. Tickets are available for the “More Life” concert, which will take place at The O2 in London on Friday September 13
