The music world has been united in mourning the loss of Bill Crook, former bassist of metal band Spiritbox. His passing was announced on social media by Kai Turmann, his bandmate in mathcore band A Textbook Tragedy. Turmann posted that Crook was “loved by so many people”, and called the news devastating.
There is no specific information about what caused Crook’s death, but friends and fans alike have taken to social media to express their sadness and to offer condolences. Spiritbox’s former vocalist, Courtney LaPlante, shared a photo of herself with Crook on her Instagram Stories, as did guitarist Mike Stringer. Spiritbox’s label, Pale Chord, also posted a message asking people to give the band and its members time and space to process their loss.
Crook joined Spiritbox in 2018, and was part of the band until his departure in May 2022. The band confirmed that his replacement would be former As I Lay Dying member Josh Gilbert, and said in a statement at the time that Crook’s decision to leave had been mutual.
Since leaving Spiritbox, Crook had been working on new music in the studio with Underoath’s Aaron Gillespie. He shared a reel on Instagram earlier this month to hint at the collaboration, saying that they had recorded five new songs together. There is no information currently available about whether those songs will be released.
Crook’s death has been met with an outpouring of tributes from his friends and colleagues in the music industry. Ahren Stringer, member of Amity Affliction, shared a series of Instagram Stories in tribute to Crook. In one, he shared a screen grab of a text conversation he had with Crook in May, during which Crook said that he was sober and had recently come out of rehab. Many others posted messages of love and support on social media, expressing their shock and sadness at Crook’s passing
