Manchester’s Blossoms preview their fifth studio album Gary with the release of new single Perfect Me. The group has already given fans a taste of their forthcoming release with the title track and What Can I Say After I’m Sorry?. Perfect Me is described as a “driving, anthemic” song and lead singer Tom Ogden explains that it was “written around a Moog synthesiser arpeggiator” and came together in just “about half an hour”.
Describing it as a “subconscious nod” to ABBA, Springsteen and The Killers, Ogden said that he wanted the lyrics to reflect the pursuit of perfection that “doesn’t exist”. The five-piece band, made up of Tom, Joe Donovan, Myles Kellock, Josh Dewhurst and Charlie Salt, are pleased with how the new single turned out. Drummer Donovan commented how the song “nearly didn’t make the album, and now full circle – it’s a single”.
Gary was produced by Blossoms’ frequent collaborator James Skelly of The Coral, and Jungle’s Josh-Lloyd Watson. The album also features co-writing credits from Irish singer-songwriter CMAT on the tracks I Like Your Look and Why Do I Give You The Worst Of Me?. Ogden said that Gary is “about the five of us recording live in a room together for the first time in years” and is a reflection of songs that tell different stories, mostly based on personal experience.
Blossoms’ fan base is eagerly anticipating the 20th September release of Gary, while the group has also just announced a separate cover version of the album featuring hits from Lady Gaga and Radiohead. Blossoms rose to fame with their 2016 eponymous debut album featuring the number one single Charlemagne. They have since released four studio albums and continue to record, collaborate and tour relentlessly
