A suspect has been taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal crash claimed the lives of six individuals, including four family members. Among the deceased were nine-year-old Rubie Morgan-Roller, four-year-old Lillie Morgan-Roller, their father Shane Roller and mother Shannen Morgan. The family’s car collided with a motorcycle on A61 between Barnsley and Wakefield on Sunday. The motorcycle’s riders, Christopher and Janine Barton, also lost their lives in the accident. Authorities are urging anyone with information on a grey Porsche 911 seen in the vicinity of the crash site to come forward.
The suspect was taken into custody earlier today and is currently being held by West Yorkshire Police. Officers are also appealing to individuals with dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage of the vehicle in question to share any relevant information. Detective Sergeant Steven Suggitt stated that officials are seeking anyone who may have observed the grey Porsche 911 being driven throughout the south of Wakefield or north of Barnsley.
The Barton victims had recently reached their 25th wedding anniversary, with their son offering up a tribute describing his parents as caring and loving individuals who prioritized the well-being of their family above all else. Meanwhile, Shane Roller’s father reportedly shared that the family lost a portion of themselves in the accident, describing his son as a remarkable father with a heart of gold.
Rubie and Lillie’s primary school educators, Kirsty Wordsworth and Clare Storr, co-head teachers at Athersley North Primary School, submitted their own tribute stating that the sisters were a joy to instruct and that their parents had always been quite supportive. Additionally, a GoFundMe campaign has raised over £340,000 for the surviving daughter of Mr. Roller and his partner. The campaign’s organizer, Paul Hepple, claimed that the child had lost her entire world in an instant and that any donations would guarantee she could heal and grow within a safe and supportive environment.
