Police officer stabbed at Durham's Frankland prison 'stable'

An officer from Greater Manchester Police was stabbed in the chest at Frankland Prison during an interview with a remand prisoner. Durham Police revealed that the police officer suffered a single stab wound to the chest at around 11:00 BST. The officer is now in a “stable” condition and is conscious. The attacker, a man in his 60s, has been detained.

Durham Police’s Det Ch Insp Chris Smiles expressed his concern, saying “Our thoughts are with our colleague, who suffered appalling injuries while simply doing his job”. Smiles added that “Thankfully, his condition is no longer critical and we wish him a full and speedy recovery”. Investigation is ongoing and the victim and his family are being continuously attended to.

HMP Frankland based in Durham City is a category A men’s jail, which has the highest level of security. Spokespeople from Greater Manchester Police and Ministry of Justice have expressed their concerns, and they have assured that the safety of the prisons remains one of the topmost priorities. Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood acknowledged the unfortunate incident on X priorly known as Twitter.
