Harehills disorder: Two more men appear in court

Police have confirmed that they have identified 40 suspects in connection with the unrest that occurred on July 18th in Harehills, a suburb of Leeds. This unrest saw a police car flipped and a double-decker bus torched. The force also revealed that two other men had been charged with offences relating to the disturbance and had appeared before Leeds Magistrates’ Court earlier.

The spokesperson for the West Yorkshire police also stated that, out of the 17 arrests made in connection with the unrest, 40 suspects had been identified through facial recognition technology as well as reviewing social media videos shot on the night. Senior detectives have been brought in to help with the investigation.

Assistant Chief Constable Patrick Twiggs confirmed that the police remained dedicated to arresting and bringing to justice those involved in the unrest. Mark Mitchell, Zamonsty Milan, and Iustin Dobre have been charged with arson reckless as to endanger life and violent disorder in relation to the incident. All three are due to appear at Leeds Crown Court on August 19.

The incident began to escalate after police officers attended an address in the suburb to assist social workers with a child protection matter. People took to the surrounding streets, hitting a police car with sticks and throwing objects before turning the vehicle onto its side. A number of fires were also lit, including the one that consumed the bus on nearby Foundry Approach.

Following the arrests made, other parties have been released on police bail with conditions imposed to reduce the likelihood of further offending. The police have since thanked the residents of Harehills for their dignified response to the events of that night and have promised to utilise all necessary resources to bring in all those believed to be involved
