The BBC’s investigation into former Radio 1 presenter Tim Westwood’s alleged sexual misconduct has been delayed due to an ongoing police investigation. The report, led by barrister Gemma White KC, investigates Westwood’s conduct during his time at the BBC in light of sexual misconduct allegations, which Westwood denies. While the report has been completed, the BBC says there are important legal processes that need to be completed before the findings can be released. The BBC hopes to publish the inquiry in autumn 2024.
One of the reasons for the delay is that the BBC needs to liaise with authorities to ensure that none of the work being carried out, including publishing the report, would negatively impact any ongoing police investigation. The BBC has spent more than £3.1 million on the investigation so far. The 65-year-old DJ and former Radio 1 presenter was first accused of sexual misconduct, including predatory behavior and unwanted touching, in incidents that took place between 1992 and 2017.
Allegations also cited Westwood abusing his power in the music industry, while another woman claimed that she was just 14 when Westwood first had sex with her. Westwood has denied the claims of misconduct against him, saying that it’s all false allegations. For anyone affected by sexual harassment within the electronic music industry, a confidential support service is available through the Association for Electronic Music, which provides confidential counselling and a safe and supportive environment. Health Assured provides the service. Anyone affected can call 0800 030 5182 to speak to trained experts who will listen and provide support.
