Steely Dan has responded to a cover of their song “Reelin’ In The Years” performed by a cover band at the Republican National Convention (RNC) last week. The band, Sixwire, played a setlist of classic covers that included “Learn To Fly” by the Foo Fighters, “Where the Streets Have No Name” by U2, and “I Want You to Want Me” by Cheap Trick. However, it was Steely Dan’s inclusion that drew the band’s disapproval.
In a Facebook post shared on Steely Dan’s official page, the band suggested that Sixwire perform their co-founder Donald Fagen’s anti-Trump song “Tin Foil Hat” in lieu of their hit track. “Hey Sixwire: If you want to play our music, how about playing the man in the Tin Foil Hat?” reads the post.
“Tin Foil Hat,” which features on Todd Rundgren’s album “White Knight,” condemns former President Trump’s time in office from 2017-2021 and pokes fun at some of his most notorious moments in office, including his use of Twitter and “alternative facts.” This isn’t the first time Steely Dan has expressed their disapproval of the Republican party, with Fagen telling Rolling Stone in 2016 that “All those right-wingers suffer from an enlargement of the amygdala in the lower brain. It makes them paranoid and aggressive.”
