The US Presidential race is the main focus of attention across the papers once again. Vice-President Kamala Harris has secured a plethora of endorsements from leading Democrats and almost all the papers have reported on this development. Ms Harris’s campaign received a record-breaking $81m (£62.6m) in donations within just 24 hours, which added to the $150m donated by a Democratic fundraising committee. Among the Democrat grandees endorsing Ms Harris is former House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, whom the Guardian describes as one of Ms Harris’ most significant backers yet. Pelosi stated that she has known the vice-president for decades and that she is “rooted in strong values, faith and a commitment to public service.”
The stream of support given to Kamala Harris could mean that the Democratic party avoids any “potential chaos” when they convene next month to officially choose their candidate, reports The Financial Times. The i newspaper has described Ms Harris as “the anointed” but polls suggest that she’ll have an uphill battle as the Trump campaign has been attacking her over her record in office. The Daily Telegraph reports that the Democratic Party’s choice of Kamala Harris is looking like a “coronation”. The paper also suggests that Harris will choose a white man as her running mate to boost her chances in battleground states, but there are concerns that her background as a liberal Californian politician could discourage some working-class voters.
The Metro drew attention to the fact that former President Barack Obama has yet to offer Kamala Harris his support. He is said to be anxious not to make her nomination appear to be a done deal. Meanwhile, the Daily Star does not believe in conventional political forecasting. The newspaper reported on UK psychic Jemima Packington, who claims to be able to read the future using asparagus, predicting that Michelle Obama will be the next President. Ms Packington uses the shapes made by the spears as they are thrown onto a surface to identify the next ruling party.
Away from the US, the Daily Mail has criticised the new government’s approach towards illegal immigration. It has been reported to resume the processing of asylum claims, including those who arrived illegally. This move reverses the axed Rwanda scheme, which would not have let illegal arrivals to settle in the UK. The newspaper claims that 70,000 people could be granted asylum as a result of these new policies.
Finally, The Daily Mirror’s front page story is about a tragic car accident in West Yorkshire that claimed the lives of an 11-year-old girl’s entire family. The paper also reports on allegations made against former Strictly Come Dancing contestant Amanda Abbington. Meanwhile, The Daily Express’s lead story is an exclusive interview with Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who has predicted that more Tory MPs will join his party within the next year.
