Shiloh, the third child of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, has opened up about the reasons behind her recent name change. The 18-year-old filed a petition for the change with the Los Angeles County Superior Court earlier this year, and has since announced that she wishes to go by the name Shiloh Nouvel Jolie going forward. This comes after two of her siblings have also distanced themselves from Pitt’s name; her sister Vivienne dropped the name from a credit in the Broadway production of The Outsiders, while her eldest sister Zahara has been referring to herself as “Zahara Marley Jolie”.
According to Shiloh’s lawyer, the name change was the product of a “significant decision” on her part, and was made following “painful events” that she has undergone recently. He also called for greater care to be taken in the press’ reporting of the matter, given that she is a young adult making a significant decision that follows legal processes.

Pitt has steadfastly denied all allegations against him. The couple are also currently embroiled in a dispute over French winery Château Miraval, with Jolie accusing Pitt of being obstructive towards her attempts to sell her share of the property.
In the meantime, Shiloh has made clear that she is willing to make a break with the past and strike out on her own, apart from the ongoing family conflicts. While her reasons for the name change remain her own, it is clear that distance from her father’s side of the family appears to be a key factor in her decision
