Kim Deal, the singer and guitarist for The Breeders, has released a new solo song titled ‘Coast’. The track, produced by Steve Albini and recorded at Electrical Audio, marks Deal’s first solo release under 4AD. The beach-inspired soundscape features Mucca Pazza, whose marching band adds to the track’s summery feel. However, beneath its bright exterior, the song portrays a more sombre message. During an interview, Deal explained that the track was inspired by a wedding band performing a cover of Jimmy Buffet, which she said showed “revelatory levels of low self-esteem”.
Although Deal takes centre stage, there are other members of her team present on the track. These include her twin sister and fellow Breeders guitarist Kelley Deal, along with rhythm section Lindsay Glover and Mando Lopez. Following the release of ‘Coast’, fans are eagerly anticipating more solo projects from Deal. Prior to the track, Deal had released a 7″ singles series in 2014, soon after departing from The Pixies.
The Breeders have been busy in the music industry too, with their 1990 debut album ‘Pod’ gaining attention from famous musicians such as Nirvana. In her interview with NME, Deal explained how ‘Pod’ inspired Nirvana to work with Albini on ‘In Utero’. She said, “I think they got Steve Albini to record ‘In Utero’ because they really liked ‘Pod’. I remember Dave Grohl saying he really liked the drum sound”. Despite Dave Grohl’s admiration for the album’s drum sound, Deal shared “Poor Dave had all these guitars and bass playing all the way through.”
More recently, The Breeders joined forces with Olivia Rodrigo on her ‘Guts’ world tour in early 2022. However, it was Deal and Grohl’s joint performance of Pixies’ ‘Gigantic’ at a charity concert that had fans thrilled. Deal continues to play an integral part in shaping the indie-rock scene
