A man from Harehills, Leeds has been charged with violent disorder and arson after a police car was turned over and a bus was set alight late last week. Iustin Dobre has been remanded to custody and is due to appear in court on Monday. Meanwhile, five more people have been arrested on charges of violent disorder and four people were bailed in connection with the incident. Reports suggest that the disorder broke out after social workers were targeted in response to a child protection issue in the area. West Yorkshire Police were attacked as they dealt with the situation and helped social care staff to safety.
Speaking about the incident, Assistant Chief Constable Pat Twiggs said that the police would be installing an increased presence in the area as a result of the unrest. A vigil was held in Harehills late last week which passed without incident. A woman was arrested on suspicion of a public order offence, but was subsequently released on condition she received a caution. The events of last week serve as yet another reminder about the importance of keeping vulnerable people safe.
Officers have appealed for anyone with information about the incident as well as any relevant CCTV footage to come forward. It is hoped that this footage may be used in the investigation into the events of last week.
