In a recent interview with The Guardian, Kim Gordon, the singer and bassist of Sonic Youth, revealed that she is “not really a fan of Taylor Swift”. Despite acknowledging that she couldn’t describe Swift’s music, she stated her preference for “pop icons” such as Billie Eilish. Gordon also mentioned that she will be performing at the Volume Festival held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales on July 18 and 19.
Recently, Gordon released a new single called ‘ECRP’ to coincide with the start of her European tour for her latest album, ‘The Collective’, which was highly-rated by NME. The album was praised for its contemporary sound, which combines art-punk, trap beats, and abrasive noise. Featuring singles such as ‘Psychedelic Orgasm’, ‘I’m A Man’, and ‘BYE BYE’, ‘The Collective’ is Gordon’s second solo album after her debut solo album, ‘No Home Record’.
While some of Gordon’s experiments on the album did not entirely succeed, such as the industrial clang of ‘It’s Dark Inside’, her songs on capitalism and masculinity-rotten have a realistic relatability that many audiences appreciate. The album’s title is aptly suited for Gordon, whose career as an icon is based on more than four decades of making individual art.
Despite her unpopular opinion of Taylor Swift, Gordon will continue to perform and delight audiences with her distinct style that builds on her growing reputation in the music industry.
