In a surprise move, Jack White, the former frontman of The White Stripes, has released a new solo album titled ‘No Name’, adding vinyl copies of the album to the purchases of select music fans at various locations of his record stores, Third Man Records, in Detroit, London, and Nashville. The album cover is completely devoid of any information about its contents and is simply labeled with the words ‘No Name’. Even White’s publicist claimed to be unaware of the release. This lead to confusion for many fans who had purchased records not knowing if their copy contained White’s new solo album. Third Man Records later posted a picture of the mystery album on Instagram encouraging fans to “Rip It”.
As fans scrambled to figure out what was on the mystery album, the Detroit radio station WDET 101.9FM played the complete album on air, which was later uploaded online. A rip of the album has since been uploaded to White’s official Reddit page. Members of the Third Man subscription services also reported receiving the album in the mail. Currently, there is no information on whether the album will receive a physical release or not.
The album features White’s signature raw blues rock sound and impressive guitar riffs throughout. The physical format shows that Side A bears an etching reading ‘Heaven And Hell’, while Side B reads ‘Black And Blue’. White has released five solo albums to date, with ‘Fear of the Dawn’ and ‘Entering Heaven Alive’ being his most recent double hit released in 2022. The latter received a four-star rating by NME, which praised his ability to cater to all on his own terms and called it one of his most satisfying works to date.
White has a history of surprise releases, but this method of distributing the album to select fans has caused quite a stir. With fans eagerly awaiting any further information, it remains to be seen if there will be a physical release of ‘No Name
