Donald Glover to retire Childish Gambino alias: “It’s not fulfilling”

After much speculation, Donald Glover has officially announced that he will retire his Childish Gambino alias. The announcement comes with the release of the final album in the Gambino era, ‘Bando Stone & The New World’, which was released on July 19th. The album features recent singles like ‘Lithonia’ and ‘In The Night’, which includes appearances from Ammarae and Jorja Smith.

In speaking with the New York Times, Glover explained his decision to leave the Childish Gambino name behind: “It really was just like, ‘Oh, it’s done’. It’s not fulfilling. And I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore.” Glover cited how difficult it has become to make albums in today’s industry, as well as increased obligations related to his TV and film projects. He added that touring schedules have also become more challenging.

Despite these challenges, Glover says his ideas of success have evolved. He no longer seeks to push himself into the industry but now sees success as “being able to put out a wide-scale album that I would listen to.” His co-manager, Fam Udeorji, hopes people will remember what they felt like in the summer of ’24 upon listening to Glover’s new album.

‘Bando Stone & The New World’ will be part of a movie Glover is working on that shares the same name. The movie is set in apocalyptic times, but a release date has not yet been announced. Glover recently released the surprise album ‘Atavista’, which is said to be a finished version of his 2020 project ‘3.15.20’. He has also confirmed the dates of his 2025 New World Tour, which will take him across the UK, Europe, and Australia.

Ultimately, Donald Glover’s decision to retire the Childish Gambino moniker follows a period of soul-searching and a shift in his priorities. Fans of his music can look forward to his next chapter, which will undoubtedly be just as noteworthy as his previous work
