UK weather: New health alert as temperatures to hit 30C this week

Parts of England have been issued with a heat-health alert as temperatures are forecast to reach 30°C (86°F) on Friday. The alert has been put in place from 17:00 BST on July 18th for London, the East Midlands, the South East, and eastern England. These areas, which have experienced a rainy July so far, will finally see a short spell of drier and warmer conditions.

Despite the high temperatures, this is unlikely to mark the start of a heatwave. A heatwave can only be declared if temperatures are above the official heatwave threshold for at least three consecutive days. This threshold is 28°C in the London area and 25°C for Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and most of northern and western England. However, temperatures could still break records, with 30.5°C having been recorded in Wisley, Surrey, on June 26th.

Yellow heat-health alerts have been issued for four areas of England by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This indicates that weather conditions could pose a risk to those who are particularly vulnerable. The alerts began on July 18th at 17:00 BST and will remain in place until 23:00 on July 20th. The affected areas are the East Midlands, East England, London, and the South East.

This will allow a plume of hot air from northern Africa and Spain to bring sunshine to some parts of the UK. However, the weekend is expected to bring a thundery breakdown in the east, leading to a dip in temperatures and some showers and rain, especially in the north and west
