Primal Scream has announced that ‘Come Ahead’ will be their latest album after an eight-year hiatus. Their new album will feature eleven tracks and is the band’s 12th studio album. This album is expected to contain some of the most personal and emotionally charged lyrics of Bobby Gillespie’s (the songwriter, vocalist, and frontman) career. The writing process began in 2022, during a moment of uncertainty about whether he would ever create another album of Primal Scream. The lyrics for the entire album came first, which is a deviation from their norm.
The album title “Come Ahead” is Scottish slang for the phrase “if anyone wants to fight, come ahead”. Bobby Gillespie considers it cheeky and represents the Glaswegian’s confident, aggressive attitude and spirit. Bobby Gillespie drew inspiration from producer, David Holmes, and his bandmate, Primal Scream guitarist Andrew Innes. They completed the album between London, Belfast, and Los Angeles. The album is expected to offer a message of hope while considering the worst humanity has to offer.
The photograph of the late Robert Gillespie Sr., Bobby Gillespie’s father, taken by Jim Lambie (Turner Prize-nominated artist), forms the basis of the album artwork. Robert Gillespie Sr. was known for his lifelong commitment to social justice, and the album identifies with similar themes of class. The album is due to come out on November 8 through BMG. The album is currently available for pre-order in double vinyl and CD. The album will also be available in limited edition mirrorboard gatefold double silver vinyl format, as well as an exclusive t-shirt, on the official album store.
Primal Scream recently announced they will be performing live again this year. Their first show of 2024 will be in October, as they collaborate with Alice Cooper for his forthcoming UK rock shows. The band is also booked to perform at the Corona Capital festival in Mexico City, with additional live performances slated to be announced soon. Bobby Gillespie has recently joined Eric Cantona on stage to play a song the ex-footballer wrote for Palestinians. Both have campaigned for Palestine in the past and continue to do so. The new album and live performances are expected to showcase the band’s vital and continuously evolving artistry.
