A heart-warming video of a man climbing a lighting installation in Glasgow city centre to rescue a trapped seagull has gone viral on social media. The video was posted by Iain Dunlop, a part-time bartender who also runs a garden maintenance and tree surgery business. Dunlop was working at the bar on Sauchiehall Street on Sunday night, following the Euro 2024 final when customers noticed the trapped bird. The man who came to the seagull’s aid was a customer, and his daring rescue was caught on camera.
According to Dunlop, seagulls caught in street lights were not a new phenomenon. He said that he had seen them caught at least twice before and added that the city centre street lights were “badly designed” and “rubbish.” However, Glasgow City Council has disputed this claim and said that it was unaware of any prior cases of birds being trapped in the lights. They also pointed out that the lights were designed to represent the outline of a tree.
The video shows the man trying to free the bird by loosening the fixtures that were trapping its wings. The process took several minutes, and at one point, the seagull appeared to be losing its balance. However, the rescuer persisted, and eventually, the bird was freed, and it flew away.
