Cameron Jones jailed for 10 years for killing girlfriend Demi Mabbitt in crash

A man who was disqualified from driving has received a 10-year prison sentence for causing the death of his girlfriend in a car accident. Cameron Jones was driving a white Audi S3 at high speed, when it crashed into a garden wall, killing Demi Mabbitt, who was lying seriously injured in the road. Jones fled the scene but turned himself in three weeks later. At his sentencing hearing at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court, a judge described his actions as “inhuman and self-centred” and cowardly.

Jones had pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and also admitted that he was uninsured and disqualified. The court heard that he had 27 previous convictions for 55 offences, including previous motoring convictions. Jones was released from custody on 6 March 2024, 30 days before the crash, and was subject to licence conditions at the time.

During the sentencing hearing, Demi Mabbitt’s father said that the family had been “torn apart” by her loss, describing his daughter as having “the most amazing laugh” and putting “a smile on everyone’s face”. Ms Mabbitt had been in a relationship with Jones for four years, against her family’s wishes, and her sister said that she “trusted too much and fell for the wrong person”.

Jordan Jones of the Crown Prosecution Service said that the case demonstrated the “severe consequences of dangerous driving”. He noted that Cameron Jones’ attempts to evade responsibility had “compounded the grief of Demi Mabbitt’s loved ones”. Detective Sergeant Debbie Hobrough, a serious collision investigation officer, said: “The tragic manner of Demi’s death has shaken the whole community.”
