Geezer Butler, the bassist for rock band Black Sabbath, recently expressed his fondness for the nu-metal movement of the 1990s and bands like Slipknot, Korn, and Limp Bizkit. Speaking to Knotfest, Butler discussed how this era of metal influenced his songwriting and how each band brought a unique take on the genre, rather than just repeating the same sound. He specifically praised Slipknot and found their rise during the nu-metal explosion to be “great.”
Butler also reflected on how other bands, like Fear Factory, influenced his writing around the same time. He wrote songs that were too heavy for either Black Sabbath or Ozzy Osbourne, so he worked with his nephew’s band, Crazy Angel, to create something “ultra-heavy” without being constrained by what he could write about. Many of these lyrics were about science fiction and explore themes that bear a resemblance to modern advancements in artificial intelligence.
Earlier this week, Butler also shared that The Beatles were one of his pivotal bands, much like his Black Sabbath bandmate, Ozzy Osbourne. He and fellow founding member Tony Iommi are not fans of contemporary heavy metal, preferring to listen to classic rock acts instead.
As for Slipknot, they recently released their first track with new drummer Eloy Casagrande, teasing that new music is on the horizon. Despite the pandemic delaying the release of their lost album “Look Outside Your Window” until 2021, vocalist Corey Taylor has promised that the record will be out this year. Slipknot’s “Here Comes The Pain” 25th-anniversary tour will kick off in the US this summer and will be followed by shows in Europe and the UK in December
