The book author was triumphant in his initial audition but August Coppola would not allow him to participate because he was too young. The critically acclaimed horror movie, which follows an FBI agent’s pursuit of a satanic serial killer who may have ties to unsolved murders, stars Maika Monroe as the agent and Cage as the killer. Cage recently said he based his character in the film on his mother, which he found “constructive”. “Not that she was satanic,” he clarified. “But her vocalisations, the way she would move.” There were a few vocal tics that he used to recall from his childhood that were helpful for him when getting into his Longlegs headspace.
The producer was wary of releasing images of Cage’s appearance in the film before its release, even from his co-stars. It has been claimed that the first time his co-star Maika Monroe saw Cage in his full outfit, her heartbeat increased to an alarming 170 bpm. In NME’s 4-star review of the horror movie, Monroe was praised, well-supported by a strong supporting cast, including Cage, who plays the titular Longlegs, a satanic serial murderer who preys on the disadvantaged.
Despite his limited screen time, it might be Cage’s most insane part to date, capping off a long career of volatile performances. “Is it scary being a lady FBI agent?” asks one little girl of Harker.
