Is ‘The Acolyte’ season two on the cards?

The first season of hit new Star Wars spin-off, The Acolyte, is soon coming to an end. The series, set 100 years before Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, was created by Russian Doll’s Leslye Headland and stars Amandla Stenberg in the dual roles of Osha and Mae. The pair are raised by a coven of witches led by Jodie Turner-Smith, with Osha training as a Jedi before becoming corrupted, while Mae turns to the dark side.

The series has garnered critical acclaim, with NME awarding it a four-star review, describing it as “new, without feeling unconnected. Pristine, but not too shiny. Fun, but still substantial. It feels like a place to grow from, as well as a worthy stand-alone story in its own right.” The final episode of season one will be released on July 16.

Fans of the show can only speculate on whether there will be a second season of The Acolyte. In an interview with Nerdist, Headland said season one would have a satisfying conclusion but was coy on the prospects of season two. She stated there were no definite plans for a follow-up but revealed she had held discussions with Pablo Hidalgo about the possibilities.

However, Headland has hinted that more stories could be forthcoming. During an interview with ComicBook, she revealed that she had additional ideas for both Jecki and Yord that she would like to see come to fruition. She added that there was already background development done on the characters by both the actors and the writers’ room, with the conclusion of season one offering scope for further exploration.

While there is currently no official word from Star Wars or Disney+, fans can take heart in the fact that past spin-offs have offered potential sequel opportunities. For now, viewers will just have to wait to see if The Acolyte is one of those lucky spin-offs
