Australian band, Speed, has taken the hardcore punk scene by storm. Known for their gnarly, brutal music that’s infused with their life experiences, Speed has become one of the leading bands in the hardcore revival movement. Their 2022 debut EP, Gang Called Speed, touched on themes like anti-Asian hate and embracing one’s identity. The band’s debut album, Only One Mode, continues the trend of meaningful lyrics with close-to-home themes.
Jem Siow, the band’s frontman, spoke about how Australia’s hardcore scene is usually “guarded and insular,” but Speed managed to break through and make a name for themselves. The band consists of Jem Siow, Aaron Siow, Josh Clayton, Dennis Vichidvongsa, and Kane Vardon, all of whom lend their vocals to the album. On Only One Mode, the group’s brotherhood and camaraderie is evident, with Jem stating, “I know my team, one word: S-P-E-E-D.”
The album’s highlight is the song The First Test, which discusses finding oneself as a marginalized individual in society. The track includes Jem playing the flute during the breakdown, which initially caused some criticism. However, the band’s ability to push their sound in new directions while remaining authentic and powerful shows their commitment to their craft. Fans of bands like Turnstile and Militarie Gun are sure to appreciate Speed’s uncompromising path.
Speed’s Only One Mode was released on July 12, 2024, via Last Ride/Flatspot Records. The band’s success speaks to the vitality of the punk scene that continues to evolve and thrive globally
