The former President of the United States, Donald Trump, received a private letter from the King of England after he survived an assassination attempt on Saturday. Buckingham Palace confirmed that the letter, whose contents have not been disclosed, was sent via the UK embassy in Washington DC on Sunday. The letter’s contents are said to reflect the sentiments expressed by the UK Prime Minister over the weekend.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer had a phone call with Mr Trump. During the conversation, Sir Keir expressed his condolences for the families of the victims and wished Mr Trump and the injured people a speedy recovery. The UK Culture Secretary and Shadow Foreign Secretary also condemned the attack and were “horrified” by the attempted assassination.
During a rally in Philadelphia, a gunman opened fire on Mr Trump, hitting him in the ear. Though injured and bleeding, the former President raised his fist to the crowd before the police subdued the attacker. One spectator was killed, and two more were seriously wounded. The shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed at the scene.
Despite the attack, Mr Trump is expected to speak at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, later this week. He stated that he plans to use the opportunity to “bring the country together” and has reportedly rewritten his speech in the wake of the shooting.
Mr Trump has been in touch with several UK leaders in recent years, including the Prince of Wales, Charles, and Queen Elizabeth II. In 2019, Charles hosted Mr Trump and his wife Melania for afternoon tea during a NATO summit in London, while Queen Elizabeth II hosted a state banquet for Mr Trump during his state visit to the UK earlier the same year
