'Inspirational' Jersey aid worker Simon Boas dies aged 47

Simon Boas, an inspirational aid worker who was diagnosed with throat cancer, has died at the age of 47. Mr Boas worked for the Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) agency for eight years, where he helped transform the organisation into the “agile and respected international aid agency it is today”. Alongside his work for JOA, Mr Boas chaired the Jersey Heritage Trust, worked with the Samaritans and served with the Trinity Honorary Police.

Mr Boas became an inspiration for millions around the world after he shared his cancer diagnosis and his approach to life and death. He wrote several articles about his experience and even wrote a book called A Beginner’s Guide to Dying, which will be published later this year. Ms Carolyn Labey, Chairman of JOA, said Mr Boas’ attitude and openness during his illness had inspired millions and received praise from many, including King Charles III.

Ms Labey said, “While we all mourn Simon’s passing, both commissioners and the dedicated staff at JOA find solace in the privilege of having worked alongside him and the honour of sharing some of his journey with him. His legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched with his kindness, compassion, sense of humour and love of life.”

Mr Boas spoke about his life and attitude towards his terminal diagnosis on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme just weeks before his death. He said his pain was under control and he was feeling as happy as he had ever been despite his illness. He added that he was “ready” to die, as death had become part of his life due to his choice of career.

Tributes have flooded in for Mr Boas following news of his death. Deputy Ian Gorst, Jersey’s Minister for External Relations and Financial Services, said that he was the “most capable public servants” he had worked with. Meanwhile, Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary, Alex Burghart, called Mr Boas a “hero”
