Australian musician Genesis Owusu captivated the audience at Mad Cool 2024, despite having to compete with The Killers for attention. Owusu opened with his song “Leaving The Light,” wearing a white shirt with the words “I feel alone a lot, but I think we’re all alone together” printed on the back. His contagious energy and Michael Jackson-esque moves drew the audience in and had them dancing and jumping in unison.
Owusu’s live performances are impressive, having previously played at venues such as Sydney Opera House and Berghain. His set at Mad Cool 2024 was anything but dull, with hits spanning across pop-punk, new wave, jazz, funk, and soul. He also delivered monologues pulled from his thick, leather-bound red book to contemplate society and his place in it. These monologues would start with him reading a few lines that would leave the audiences completely transfixed.
During “A Song About Fishing,” Owusu jumped over the barrier, immersing himself amongst the crowd, gazing into the eyes of one fan through a pair of tinted red sunglasses and twirling under the arm of another. “This is my first time in Madrid. I really appreciate all of you coming to see me and welcoming me with open arms and open hearts,” he said, pointing out the undeniable sense of communal joy that he helped create.
As he finished his performance, Owusu played an encore with “Good Times,” leaving the stage with a peace sign. Although the audience was small, it was clear that anyone in attendance witnessed the magic of a true performer. With impressively choreographed movements and spontaneity, Owusu proves to be a storyteller through his music, relatable to anyone—even those wandering alone in the crowd
