Katy Perry has hit back at criticism of her latest song’s music video, ‘Woman’s World’, stating that it was intended to be ‘satire’. Perry released the video on Thursday 11th July, after teasing it for several weeks on her social media platforms. The pop star is seen completing tasks traditionally associated with males, with other women alongside her, while singing about empowering women across the globe. However, some criticised the video, stating that it was catering to the male gaze rather than trying to overcome it.
In a social media post made during the production of the video, Perry responded to the criticism and confirmed that it was indeed intended to satirise gender norms. Perry said, “We’re kind of just having fun, being a bit sarcastic with it. It’s very slapstick and very on the nose. And with this set, it’s like, ‘Oooh, we’re not about the male gaze but we really are about the male gaze'”.
Perry received criticism from some fans who felt that the video for ‘Woman’s World’ undermined its message. However, any criticism Perry received doesn’t detract from the success of her latest album, ‘143’, which is Perry’s sixth record. The album is set for release on September 20 and is available for pre-order and pre-sale. Perry has described the album as a ‘dance party’ to which ‘everyone’s invited’ and has already begun teasing its release to fans.
Last year, it was rumoured that Perry was preparing to release her most personal material to date alongside a world tour in 2024 but no news on this has come to light since. Perry’s last studio album, ‘Smile’, released in 2020 received mixed reviews from her fans, with some stating that the album had failed to match the success of her previous albums. Perry stated in a recent interview at an American Idol event that she is working on “one of [her] biggest songs that has yet to come out,’ hinting that fans have even more to look forward to following the release of her new album.
Perry’s latest single is set to divide fans, with some commending the song as cynicism and some criticising the star for their interpretation of the video’s message. Despite this, Perry’s latest work is sure to delight her fans, whose patience has been rewarded with the announcement of her upcoming album.
