Dar Disku has announced the release of their self-titled debut album, which will be available in September on Soundway Records. Their lead single “Dbayli,” featuring Yacine Elkhaldi, aims to combine the musical traditions of the SWANA region with current electronic sounds, hip hop, psychedelia and more. The track was the first to be recorded during the album writing process and was developed via demos exchanged on WhatsApp from Algeria to Bristol. The full album captures a range of emotions and influences, including Sudanese funk, Khaleeji disco, Algerian rai, Turkish psych, and Egyptian folk.
The duo explains that “Dbayli” was created with the smoky discotheques of the SWANA region in mind. Yacine’s vocals immediately resonated with them, as they wanted to create something both joyful and melancholic at the same time. His style is reminiscent of the greatest rai singers such as Cheb Khaled and Faudel. After much work and testing on the dancefloors of Croatia, Bahrain, Rajasthan, and London, they knew this track was special and would be loved by many.
Dar Disku’s deep appreciation and passion for the music traditions of the SWANA region is demonstrated through their new record. The album is a culmination of years of learning, listening, and creating, and it is designed to capture a variety of emotions of cinema through analogous techniques. The Soundway Records album covers a range of influences, including “electronic genres, hip hop, jazz, and psychedelia” in addition to the aforementioned folk styles. The album is already available for pre-order
