The upcoming European tour dates for The Smile have been canceled due to a serious illness impacting the band’s Jonny Greenwood. The band includes Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood as well as drummer Tom Skinner from Sons Of Kemet. The band posted an update on Jonny Greenwood’s health and clarified the reasoning behind the canceled performances on their official Instagram account. Jonny experienced a severe infection a few days prior and required emergency hospital treatment, including time spent in intensive care. Thankfully, the latest update from the medical team taking care of him indicates that he is out of danger. The band has been instructed that they must cancel all present engagements until he is back to full health.
The Smile was scheduled to perform in Sigulda, Warsaw, Winterthur, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Bordeaux, and Valencia. This was intended to promote their second album, “Wall of Eyes.” NME praised this album as it cements the group as one of the most creative and impressive rock bands in existence. The tour cancellation is necessary so that Jonny can make a full and speedy recovery. The band has let fans know that refunds for the scheduled headline shows will be available through ticket providers.
The four-star review NME provided The Smile’s gig in London commended the band’s “GarageBand jam” style and described the show’s feel. The review noted the lack of self-indulgence amongst the band, even with some dissonant clarinet solos, and greenwood making shredding on a harp look cool. Fans will, however, enjoy that Thom Yorke has recently announced an upcoming solo tour. This includes a show in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Japan, with more destinations yet to come.
Whilst it is most unfortunate that the European dates have been canceled, The Smile has the most important thing in this instance; a speedy and full recovery of a valued and treasured band member. The disappointment felt by fans will be tempered by the knowledge that the band will soon be up and running once more
