Brooklyn-based band, Hello Mary, has been making music for a while now, having released their self-titled album in 2023. However, it’s their latest album, Emita Ox, that has caught the attention of music enthusiasts on both sides of the Atlantic. Helmed by guitarist/vocalist Helena Straight, bassist Mikaela Oppenheimer, and drummer/vocalist Stella Wave, the trio’s music draws inspiration from the 90s alternative rock scene and is heavily influenced by artists like Radiohead, Elliott Smith, and Jeff Buckley.
While the band’s debut album paid homage to their influences through grunge-infused indie rock, Emita Ox takes a more expansive approach. The album draws upon contemporary elements laced with heavy distortion and psychedelic dreamscapes, resulting in an emotional roller coaster of rousing, alt-rock anthems. The band’s collective effort shines through with each member lending their creative talent to create an impressive and artful album.
Hello Mary’s music has evolved significantly over the past few years, as band members have expanded their musical tastes and grown both emotionally and intellectually. They’re also best friends, which has made touring, practicing and recording together an experience filled with fun and comradery.
Hello Mary’s sophomore album Emita Ox is a must-listen, showcasing the trio’s musical growth and collective synergy. The album, co-produced with Alex Farrar, is a confident, ear-catching collection of alternative rock tracks for music lovers far and wide. As part of Rough Trade on the Rise, Hello Mary is a band worth keeping an eye on as they continue to make headway in the music industry
