M25 closure: Delays warning ahead of latest weekend motorway closure

A section of the M25 in Surrey has been closed over the weekend, causing delays for drivers. The closure is part of a £317m project to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow, with this being the third of five weekend closures planned for this year. The road closure will allow for the installation of a new bridge at the roundabout of junction 10, with the project set to be completed by the summer of 2025. Junction 10 is one of the UK’s busiest and most dangerous motorway junctions.

During weekends, between 10:00 and 21:00, around 4,000 to 6,000 vehicles typically use the M25 in each direction between junctions nine (Leatherhead) and 11 (Chertsey). The closures have an impact on a range of road users travelling to London airports and ferry services. The RAC has advised drivers travelling to airports to leave earlier than usual, with diversion routes in place to manage traffic flow. National Highways is concerned about satellite navigation systems potentially directing motorists onto minor roads, causing further gridlock in residential areas.

The weekend closure has caused concern, with some stating that the increase in traffic caused by the closure could cause travel difficulties for drivers in the region. This concern was echoed by Chris Wood of The AA who urged drivers to plan their journey, avoiding the west side of the M25 if possible, and to check ferry and tunnel operators’ websites for updates before setting off. The final two weekend closures will take place later this year, with the project scheduled to be completed by 2025
