In honor of what would have been his 50th birthday, the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation (SLDF) has announced More Life – Pass The Mic, a musical celebration of Stephen Lawrence. The event will feature a number of influential Black British artists such as D Double E, Ghetts, The Kanneh-Masons, Mahalia, Nao, and Wretch 32, with other names set to be added to the bill.
The event aims to “celebrate the power of Black culture, community, and allyship, and to connect Stephen’s story to the next generation, elevating his legacy to its rightful place in history.” Stephen Lawrence was an 18-year-old Black teenager who was murdered in a racially motivated attack in 1993 in Eltham, a murder that his father said “opened the country’s eyes” to racism.
A later inquiry into his death prompted the 1999 Macpherson report, which found that the Metropolitan police were “institutionally racist.” The Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation was created to celebrate his legacy and to “inspire a more equal, inclusive society, and to foster opportunities for marginalized young people in the U.K.”
Tickets for More Life – Pass The Mic are on sale now. Baroness Lawrence, Stephen Lawrence’s mother and Founder of SLDF, said regarding the event, “Music has the power to touch people’s hearts and inspire shifts in how they view themselves and the world around them, much like Stephen did for those who knew and loved him, and the many who only know his story.” Together, we can make a collective commitment to building a kinder, more equitable society in Stephen’s name
