Police have announced that two men’s bodies were found inside suitcases abandoned at the Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. The public has been warned not to approach a suspect related to the deaths that was seen with the bags on the bridge on Wednesday evening. Police have widened their investigation to London, with the Metropolitan Police taking the lead to find the suspect who travelled to Bristol from London earlier that day. A 36-year-old man was arrested on Friday in south-east London, but police believe he is not the suspect featured in the photo released to the public.
One witness claimed that a cyclist chased the suspect as he fled from the scene, shouting at him which is when the photo of the suspect was taken. Several forensic post-mortem exams have been carried out, but only one has provided conclusive results. Police officers and forensic investigators were seen entering a property in west London on Friday despite it still being unclear whether or not it is related to the case.
Avon and Somerset Police’s acting Bristol commander, Vicks Hayward-Melen, at a press conference on Friday, stated that the discovery of human remains caused shock and deep concern across communities. Although the investigation is being led by different police authorities, Avon and Somerset police officers have already increased patrols in Clifton and Leigh Woods to help with the search.
