Water companies in England and Wales have declared that a proposed average 21% increase in bills will not be sufficient to solve problems including sewage leaks. Regulator Ofwat has called for annual rises in bills limited to £19 ($24) until 2030, as part of measures to boost funding for improvements such as replacing pipes and reducing sewer discharges. The proposed increases, to come into effect from April, vary by location, with Southern Water set to impose the biggest effective rise of 44% to £183 over five years, Thames Water charging a 23% rise to £535 and customers of Anglian Water required to pay a 13% increase to £66
