Scotland’s biggest music festival, TRNSMT, is set to ban single-use vapes in an effort to improve sustainability. Festival-goers will also be prohibited from bringing flags, glass and selfie sticks onto the site. Festival director Geoff Ellis hopes that attendees “only leave footprints” when the three-day event comes to a close. Last year, TRNSMT and Glastonbury added single-use vapes to their list of prohibited items.
Though this year’s lineup is reportedly roughly even in terms of gender, it has been criticized for the lack of women featured on the main stage. Only one woman has ever headlined the festival since it began in 2017. Ellis acknowledged the festival’s work towards improving gender balance, stating that “it’s not the three headliners so there’s still work to be done.” The festival features a number of Scottish acts, as developing homegrown, grassroots talent has always been a focus.
CCTV and police detection dogs will be present at the entrance and throughout the park, and Ellis says that the festival’s rigorous searching system at the gate with stewards will make enforcing the ban on single-use vapes relatively simple. The sale of the devices has been illegal in Scotland since April, due to health and environmental concerns.
Sunny intervals and a couple of light showers are expected over the course of the weekend, with a gentle breeze providing relief from the sun. Ellis expressed his excitement for the audience to arrive and explore the site, not just for the main stage acts, but also for other features like the Big Feed food area and cocktail bars
