More and more women, from celebrities to the woman next door, are seeking a self-compassionate approach to ageing. Anna Murphy, a 52-year-old fashion director and author of Destination Fabulous, advocates against the use of Botox and other invasive beauty treatments. “All I did [with my book] was say you don’t have to inject things into your face, or worse still cut your face,” she says. “It should be such an obvious thing to say but it was such a relief to people.”
Instead of subtle rebranding, women are rediscovering their love for natural beauty, turning away from the relentless marketing ploys of the beauty industry. Kate Groombridge, a former model, has returned to modelling due to high demand for more natural, unretouched images of mature women. Pamela Anderson made headlines recently when she appeared makeup-free at Paris Fashion Week, confidently asserting that “beauty does come from within.”
Unfortunately, social media has exacerbated the beauty industry’s portrayal of a naturally ageing face as unattractive. However, many millennial women, who have grown up with exposure to photoshopping and retouching, are taking a stand against the impossible beauty ideal. They are rebelling against the narrative that encourages women to feel bad about themselves and spend money to feel better.
As Murphy explains, “It’s a responsibility for us as we get older to show people coming up behind us that ageing is nothing to be afraid of; it’s something to embrace.
