Pearl Jam’s recent health concerns have been described as a “near-death experience” by Eddie Vedder at a concert in Barcelona. The band had to cancel shows in both London and Berlin which reportedly affected “a few” people on the tour, leading to Vedder feeling very uncomfortable. He likened the feeling to chest bronchitis, where it became difficult to breathe and survival was not guaranteed. This frightening experience was a stark reminder of the precious nature of life, and Vedder remarked on how lucky they were to be able to travel the world and play their music to fans.
In an effort to appease fans, the band released a statement apologizing for the cancellations and the emotional toll it might have taken on those who had made plans to attend. Unfortunately, they expressed their inability to recuperate as the reasons behind the cancellations came “on waves” and affected different members of the band at different times.
Earlier in the tour, Vedder had already been under the weather when the band performed in Manchester, with his voice showing clear signs of struggling due to illness. This news was empty to fans who had gone to see them, but fortunately, Pearl Jam’s health seems to be improving. As the band travels to the US to continue their tour before playing in Australia and New Zealand in November.
Pearl Jam’s latest album “Dark Matter” was out in April and, according to NME, showcased the band’s return to the sound and style that had put them on the music map in the early 1990s.
