BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright’s cause of death confirmed

DJ Steve Wright, a long-time presenter for BBC Radio 2, passed away earlier this year at the age of 69. A recent death certificate has revealed that he died from acute peritonitis and a perforated gastric peptic ulcer. Peritonitis is an infection of the lining of the abdomen, and the causes of gastric ulcers are largely unknown, though they are thought to be linked to an increased risk of stomach cancer. Wright’s death had previously been ruled out for an inquest.

Wright began working for the BBC in 1980 on Radio 1, and the following year he began hosting the Steve Wright In The Afternoon show. He continued to work at the broadcaster until his death in 2022, recently replacing veteran broadcaster Paul Gambaccini on the station’s Pick Of The Pops that year.

Following Wright’s death, numerous figures from across the entertainment industry paid tribute to the broadcaster. His Radio 2 colleague Jo Whiley described him as “the broadcaster’s broadcaster”, adding that he was “one of the kindest, loveliest people I’ve had the pleasure to work with”. A special tribute episode of Sunday Love Songs was also aired on BBC Radio 2, hosted by Liza Tarbuck.

Wright will be deeply missed by his listeners and colleagues alike, and his contributions to the world of broadcasting will not be forgotten anytime soon
