Lady Gaga has been labeled a scene stealer by the casting director of Joker: Folie à Deux for her role as Harley Quinn. Gaga will play the sidekick and lover of Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker in the film, which is set to release on October 4th and is directed by Todd Phillips. Francine Maisler, the casting director for the film, was shocked with Gaga’s performance and stated “she’s going to blow your mind.” The director of the film wanted to work with the pop-star and actress before Maisler even had a chance to suggest her.
The first trailer for the upcoming movie dropped in April and the second trailer showcasing Gaga’s character closely was released recently. According to sources, the movie “is described as a predominantly jukebox musical project” and will feature at least fifteen “well-known” songs, including “That’s Entertainment,” a classic hit from The Band Wagon performed by Judy Garland. Oxymoronic to the largely upbeat musical nature of the movie, a seemingly serial killer Joker will counter-intuitively react to the music, making the film all the more chilling and provocative.
Actors Steve Coogan, Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, and Zazie Beetz are also part of the cast alongside Phoenix and Gaga. The movie will also have Hildur Guðnadóttir, who worked as a composer for the first film’s score, returning to score for the sequel. It has been teased that the upcoming score “features a lot of music.”
Lady Gaga is no stranger to film. In 2018, the artist appeared in A Star is Born, which was directed by and starred Bradley Cooper. That role earned her critical acclaim and nominations, including a Golden Globe.
Lady Gaga has shared the first look of herself in the iconic Harley Quinn costume of Joker: Folie à Deux. And while waiting for the film to air, the artist has been busy working on her new album, which explores the “art of intensity” and according to her, is “nothing like anything I’ve ever made before.” She has given no indication of when the album may be released
