James Corden’s play “The Constituent” was delayed for a few minutes on Saturday night to let the audience watch the penalty shootout between England and Switzerland. The play, which was set to begin at the Old Vic Theatre in London, was timed just as the shootout was to begin. Fans had been watching the intense shootout on their mobile phones as they waited.
Corden and his castmates were also following the game, and the audience’s cheers when England won was the moment they realised they had to delay the play. Corden, who is a football fan, said that they weren’t in the right mood to start a serious play about serious issues after such a momentous game. Instead, he and his co-stars went onstage with iPads and began commentating the penalties.
After celebrating with the audience, they rushed offstage to prepare for the play, which began 10 minutes after its scheduled start time. Two attendees shared their thoughts on the delay, saying that Corden had played it very well, was quite charming, and engaged the audience. There were lots of cheers and applause, and the atmosphere was tense in the theatre.
