Dawn Hollyoak: Great British Bake Off star dies aged 61

Former Great British Bake Off contestant Dawn Hollyoak has died at the age of 61, with the announcement coming via her Instagram page. Hollyoak competed in the Channel 4 show in 2022 and was the sixth contestant to leave the competition. Judges, such as Paul Hollywood, expressed their condolences on social media, with Hollywood posting a tribute saying “I’m so sorry to hear that, send my love to the family, a lovely lady x.” Fellow contestant Carole Edwards spoke of her sadness: “A beautiful and talented lady inside and out, fly high my friend, life just won’t be the same without you.”

Other amateur bakers who competed on Hollyoak’s series paid tribute, including Maxy Maligisa, who said: “Dawn will be missed so much. Our memories together are memories that I will cherish forever.” Hollyoak described herself as an “artist in and out of the kitchen” on the show’s website, loving the challenge of illusion cakes and intricate designs. Following her departure from the show, she said: “I really don’t want to share tears over it because it’s been the most amazing experience.”

Hollyoak had three children and was remembered as an “amazing mother, grandmother, wife and friend” by her family in their message announcing her death. Giuseppe Dell’Anno, who won the series in 2021, called the news “devastating” and remembered Hollyoak’s “joyous personality and infectious smile.” He added that she “will be sorely missed, but will live in the heart of those who loved her forever!”

Hollyoak’s departure has seen an outpouring of tributes to the former contestant, with many celebrating her love of baking and skills in the kitchen. Her legacy on the show is one of her joyous personality, intricate designs and, most importantly, her passion. The show is poorer for her not being in the tent but her memory will remain a happy one for those who knew her, both on and off screen.
