The much-anticipated Community movie has yet to begin production despite being greenlit by Peacock. Actor Joel McHale, who played Jeff Winger in the beloved comedy series, has taken responsibility for the delay in an interview with GQ. He cited his busy schedule as the reason the film has not yet been shot, despite everyone involved being “very excited” about it. McHale did not give a definitive release date, stating vaguely that it will possibly arrive next year.
Rumours have abounded that one reason for the delay is Donald Glover’s availability. However, McHale quickly rebutted this, saying in no uncertain terms that it is his own schedule that has caused the hold-up. Glover confirmed his involvement and enthusiasm for the project earlier this year. The Community movie was announced in September 2022, and fans have been eagerly anticipating its arrival ever since. The comedy series, which focused on a group of misfit students at a community college, ended in 2014 after six seasons.
The movie was originally suggested by Glover during a virtual reunion table read with the cast in 2020, marking his first appearance since departing the show in season 5. The rest of the original cast – Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong – will be reuniting with the show’s creator Dan Harmon for the film. McHale and Andrew Guest will executive produce. The absence of Chevy Chase, who departed the series in season 4 due to conflicts with Harmon, was confirmed earlier this year.
Peacock, which is owned by NBCUniversal, is producing the film. The network’s Chairman of Entertainment Content, Susan Rovner, called the movie “iconic, hilarious, and cool” in a statement. She also praised the “passionate fan movement” that emerged around the show, culminating in the long-awaited film adaptation. The script has been completed, but fans will have to wait a while longer to see their favourite characters reunite on screen
