Jack Nicholson’s ex-partner says he’s “never retired”

Despite retirement rumours that have circulated for years surrounding Oscar-wining actor Jack Nicholson, his ex-partner, Lara Flynn Boyle, has claimed that the 86-year-old actor “has never retired”. Boyle, who dated Nicholson over twenty years ago, spoke with People and referred to the Hollywood legend as “a huge part of my life”. Nicholson’s last appearance in a feature film was in 2010’s How Do You Know, a romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, and Paul Rudd. While he has refused to return to acting for the past 14 years, Nicholson has never officially retired. In a 2013 interview with Vanity Fair, he stated that he was less driven to “be out there anymore”.

When questioned about his retirement, Boyle made it clear that Nicholson was “making magic” and declared, “The world of Jack is always here. There’s no retiring for the world of Jack. Never”. This indicates that Nicholson might have a project on the horizon. However, last year, friend and Hollywood producer Lou Adler claimed that Nicholson would rather “sit under a tree and read a book” than return to acting, adding that the actor wants a quiet life outside of the spotlight. Adler recounted an anecdote about Nicholson on the Podcast WTF With Marc Maron where he recalled how the actor refused a movie offer, saying “You know what I did today? I sat under a tree and I read a book”. Adler laughed and added, “That sounds like Jack. He’s doing whatever he really wants to do. He wants to be quiet. He wants to eat what he wants. He wants to live the life he wants.”

Nicholson, a three-time Oscar winner, has won accolades for his roles in One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Terms of Endearment, and As Good As It Gets. He has a total of twelve Oscar nominations under his belt and is considered the Academy’s most nominated male actor in history. Despite his long-standing career, the world eagerly anticipates if and when the film legend will make a return to the screen. However, Nicholson has always done things on his terms and seems to be enjoying his retirement, whether it’s just sitting under a tree reading a book or making magic happen
