The acclaimed electronic duo Orbital made their way back to Glastonbury this year with two special guests, Melanie C and Tilda Swinton, for a captivating show. Swinton opened their set draped in a long white dress embellished with light-up spectacles, summoning the audience to take a deep breath and focus on a certain spot while performing their single ‘Deeper’. As she began, Tim and Paul Hartnoll launched into the first track of the night behind her.
Later, they were joined on stage by the former Spice Girls member Mel C who energetically bounced around the stage in all-white sportswear with light-up glasses, while belting out their track ‘Spicy’. This was not the first time Mel C has appeared as a guest with Orbital, having made a surprise appearance at the festival two years prior. The track ‘Spicy’ is also only played live and was recently performed by the duo during their BBC Session for Jo Whiley.
This marked the seventh time Orbital has played at the annual worthy farm music bash, having last year revealed they had been “banned from Top of the Pops for being utterly boring!” The duo played numerous tracks, including ‘Deeper,’ ‘Dirty Rat,’ ‘Satan / Beelzedub,’ ‘Remind,’ ‘Impact (The Earth Is Burning),’ ‘Halcyon + On + On,’ ‘Spicy,’ ‘Belfast,’ and ‘Chime.’
The combination of the energetic melody and mesmerising light show were an instant hit with fans. Even Twitter users who couldn’t attend expressed their excitement about the performance, with one user tweeting: “Orbital now on live at Glastonbury with Tilda Swinton – massive FOMO. Saw them headline Glastonbury in 1994 on The Other Stage. Introducing dance music to the mainstream. #Glastonbury2024 #Glastonbury24 #Orbital.”
This year’s Glastonbury still has several acts to come this weekend, including SZA, Shania Twain, Janelle Monae, The National, Two Door Cinema Club, Avril Lavigne, Justice, Nia Archives, James Blake, and Romy. As always, festival-goers can rely on NME for live updates as it happens
