The search for missing teenager Jay Slater, who disappeared on the island of Tenerife, has been called off by authorities. However, Slater’s family and friends have vowed to continue searching for him. The 19-year-old had been on holiday in the area with friends and was last heard from on June 17 when he called a friend to say he was lost and in need of water. Despite efforts by Spanish officials and volunteers, no trace of Slater has been found.
Rachel Hargreaves, the mother of Slater’s best friend Brad Hargreaves, has said that the group are determined to keep searching themselves, despite the official operation ending. The family is working with mountaineer Paul Arnott and is seeking anyone with mountain rescue experience to aid in the search. Slater’s father and older brother are also on the island to continue efforts to find him. The family is set to speak to Spanish authorities on Monday about the ongoing investigation.
Slater had been in Tenerife attending the NRG music festival with Hargreaves and another friend, Lucy Law. He reportedly left the group in the early hours of June 17 and got into a car with two British men. According to calls made by Slater to his friends, the family believes that he attempted to get on a bus after leaving an Airbnb in Masca rented by the two men. The pair have been questioned by authorities and were found to not be involved in Slater’s disappearance.
Slater’s family has described him as a bubbly and popular young man, and authorities have confirmed that the case remains open with several lines of investigation. Lancashire Police, who are supporting the family, have deferred all inquiries to the Spanish authorities
