Sleaford Mods played to a sparse crowd during their set on the Woodsies stage at Glastonbury 2024, despite winning over fans on social media. The duo’s fourth appearance at the festival spanned their 17-year career and included a high-energy set with songs like ‘UK GRIM’, ‘Kebab Spider’, and ‘B.H.S.’. While the set received positive reactions on platforms like Twitter, vocalist Jason Williamson expressed disappointment over the size of the crowd, even telling them to “fuck off” at one point.
The sparse crowd may have been due to a set clash with The Streets on the Other Stage and Orbital playing the Park Stage. Williamson seemed to use the performance as an opportunity to address earlier controversy surrounding the band’s stance on Palestine. During the Glastonbury set, he adjusted the lyrics of ‘Stick in a Five and Go’ to include lines such as “you fucking political platform bastard” and “you fucking big mad bastard”. The original lyric was “just a bit of politics can capture your mind, but don’t ask me what I think ‘cos I think you’re just fine.”
The band also performed a cover of Pet Shop Boys’ ‘West End Girls’ during their set, a version they released late last year with all profits going towards UK homeless charity Shelter. Sleaford Mods’ Glastonbury gig came just after they announced a 10th anniversary reissue of their album, ‘Divide & Exit’.
Other artists set to perform at the festival over the weekend include SZA, Shania Twain, Janelle Monae, The National, Two Door Cinema Club, Avril Lavigne, James Blake, and Romy. Camila Cabello’s set received a three-star rating, while Dua Lipa’s Friday headline performance earned her four stars. IDLES and Fontaines D.C. both nabbed perfect five-star ratings, as did the festival’s first K-pop performers, SEVENTEEN.
